National Intellectual Property Awards 2020

A recent notification on 8th January 2020 by the Intellectual Property Forum-India gives an insight into the National Intellectual Property Awards which are conferred annually and are aimed at recognizing and rewarding the top achievers, comprising individuals, institutions, organisations and enterprises, for their IP creations having contributed towards strengthening IP eco-system in the country for encouraging creativity and innovation.

These awards will be presented to these achievers in an event organised by Intellectual Property Office in collaboration with Confederation of Indian Industry, in Delhi on 26th April 2020 which coincides with the World Intellectual Property Day.

The Notification also mentions the 10 categories for the National Intellectual Property Awards 2020 programme. Each of the awards carries a cash prize of one lakh rupees along with a trophy and citation for the same.

This year the National IP Awards are linked with the WIPO Awards which has further eliminated the need for filing for a separate application for the WIPO Awards.

Parameters for Selection:

The parameters on which these awards will be handed over are:

1. Number of IPRs filed / granted / registered.
2. Growth in IPR portfolio in the last three calendar years.
3.Leveraging of IPRs for achieving commercial goals (manufacturing, licensing, launching of new products / processes associated with granted / registered IPRs, marketing / export etc.)

(For the purpose of these awards the performance in the last 3 calendar years will be taken into consideration)

Eligibility:

The applicant for the IP Award should be an individual or a legal entity who has the ownership over that Intellectual Property as provided under the respective IP Act.

Process for filing the Application:

The application form is available on the IP India website wherein the applicant can fill in their respective details and In addition to that an Excel Sheet pertaining to the respective/selected category has to be accompanied mandatorily along with the application. (If an applicant wishes to apply for more than one award, a separate application should be filed for each award.)

It is clarified that the application (with the annexures) is required to be submitted both in electronic and physical format. The Application for IP Award, complete in all respects, shall be sent to the following address so as to reach on or before 7th February, 2020, and the same shall also be sent by e-mail to ipawards.ipo@gov.in on or before 7th February, 2020.
