WIPO Translate is an AI-powered, instant patent translation tool developed by WIPO for more than 12 languages pairs. WIPO Translate is a tool developed for the translation of sentences and phrases of technical nature.
WIPO Translate is designed to provide the possibility to understand the content of a text and provide alternative translations for each segment of the text to users. Since September 2016, Neural Machine Translation (NMT) is used to provide a more accurate translation of patent texts, whereas WIPO Translate (since September 2017) offers Neural Machine Translation in all 10 official languages of the PCT.
The first country to adopt WIPO’s artificial intelligence (AI) based translation tool for patent documents is the Republic of Korea. WIPO Translate is used to translate highly technical patent documents into a second language. This AI-based tool has gained praise for producing a more accurate translation.
WIPO provides its Translate technology to several international organizations, including the United Nations Secretariat, several specialized agencies of UN and the World Trade Organization. The AI-based translation tool is used to translate all patent documents in one of the official languages of the Patent Cooperation Treaty, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish into English and vice-versa. The aim of WIPO is to expand the language base of its new patent translation tool to include other unofficial and unlisted UN languages.

Working of WIPO translate
This AI-based translation tool is trained using a corpus of patent title and abstract pairs translated by humans and also trained on aligned descriptions and claims. It is based on Machine Learning techniques, which means the tool tries to reproduce phrase translations already seen during the training. Therefore, the tool is specific to patent texts.
